General Introduction
About us

College of Energy was founded in 2009, formerly known as the Department of Energy Utilization. It is one of the earliest colleges of energy in China.

The College, led by Prof. Zhongfan Liu, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a new type of international public college under the key construction of Soochow University. The college gathers international top talents and teams, matches first-class platform facilities, focuses on basic researches and applications of energy and materials with important development prospects and great innovation opportunities, and cultivates talents with international vision and competitiveness.

The college has gathered an elite teaching team with high academic reputation, solid professional theoretical level and rich practical teaching experience. There are around 90 faculty staffs in the college, including 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 8 national-level talents, more than 20 provincial-level talents, and 20 school-level distinguished professors. The College of Energy implements a scholars-centered management and system and forms an advocating truth, freedom and democracy atmosphere. It is a cradle for outstanding talents to be trained. Our staff and research groups are recognized internationally and publish regularly in peer-reviewed journals.

The School has two doctoral degree program: New Energy Science and Engineering, Energy and Environmental Systems Engineering, Four master's degree program: New Energy Science and Engineering, Energy and Environmental Systems Engineering, Materials and Chemical Engineering (professional degree), Energy and Power (professional degree), Three undergraduate majors: New Energy Materials and Devices, New Energy Materials and Devices (chinese-foreign cooperation), and Energy and Power Engineering. Among which, New Energy Materials and Devices (chinese-foreign cooperation) is an undergraduate program jointly run by Soochow University and Canada Victoria University (3+2). A provincial teaching demonstration center: Jiangsu New Energy Materials and Devices Teaching Demonstration Center. Now, it has nearly 800 students, including nearly 200 doctoral and master students and more than 650 undergraduate students. Great emphasis is placed on the cultivation of students' innovative ability, implements the undergraduate tutorial program to select outstanding undergraduates to study in the research group and participate in scientific research from the third semester. The college organizes outstanding undergraduate summer camp regularly to promote undergraduate study. It focuses on creating an international talent training atmosphere and vigorously recruits international students. There are more than 20 international students studying for master’s and doctoral degrees.

Soochow Institute for Energy and Materials Innovations (SIEMIS) as the platform of basic research innovation, with advanced carbon materials and wearable technology, solar energy utilization and transformation, efficient power energy storage batteries, hydrogen energy and fuel cell, the theoretical calculation, energy and environmental systems engineering, low carbon energy saving technology as key research directions, the college focuses on conquering important scientific problems. There is one provincial key laboratory (Jiangsu Advanced Carbon Materials and Wearable Energy Technology Key Laboratory), with a large ****ysis test center, more than 20 sets of testing instruments and equipment valued at more than 50 million, including SEM, XRD, XPS, Raman, AFM, ICP-OES elemental ****yzer. In the past 5 years, it has obtained more than 150 various scientific research projects, with a total fund of more than 62 million. It has published more than 400 academic papers in Nature.Comm, Adv. Mater., J. A. Chem. Soc, etc., and more than 80 authorized patents.

Based on Beijing Graphene Institute and Zhangjiagang Institute of Industrial Technology, it is committed to collaborative place, college and enterprise cooperation, creates a new mode for collaborative innovation. It has 11 national-level and provincial-level important technology platforms, such as Institute of Chemical Power Sources.

The college focuses on cultural construction. Various academic activities were held throughout the year, including monthly New Energy Forum, which invites academic specialists from all over the world to give academic lectures, monthly academic lunch meeting to strengthen the exchange and cooperation among staffs, annual postgraduate academic carnival, providing chances to postgraduate students to share scientific research, and nearly 50 donated scholarships are awarded.
